Extracurricular Activities in the CWC

When you walk into the Coe Writing Center—aka the CWC—you're stepping into the largest peer-led writing center in the nation. With over 50 consultants from various fields of study and college years, there's hardly a paper at least one consultant hasn't touched.

Every day, we sit in red chairs, couches, and tables, eagerly waiting to tackle the next assignment that walks through the doors. From first-year seminar papers to scholarship applications and graduate school applications, the CWC consultants are ready to assist. But have you ever wondered what your fellow consultant does when they are not developing a thesis statement?

Our impressive roster includes athletes from soccer, softball, archery, bowling, esports, fencing, and swimming. Many student-athlete consultants can attest to giving off-schedule conferences to their teammates while traveling for competitions. With each sport having a demanding competition schedule, these conferences are a benefit to athletes. Consultants are also involved in Greek life, such as Alpha Omicron Pi and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Others showcase their talents on stage through the Concert Choir or the Off-Stage Players.

If you want to debate foreign policies, there is a member from the Model UN who is eager to dive in. Or, if you have a question regarding the concept of life, a member of the Philosophy Club will help you tackle these ideas. From the Political Science Club to Geekfest to the Environmental Club, the writing center is bursting with passion for many aspects of life.

Outside of the writing center and Coe's campus, consultants passionately serve the Cedar Rapids community. From working with children at Kids On Course to responding to emergencies in the ECC department. Consultants have a heart of service for their fellow students and the community around them.

In the Spring semester, these various extracurriculars and passions are on full display through the official Coe literary magazine, The Pearl. While a select group of consultants edits this creative collection, students and consultants alike submit artwork, poetry, and other forms of writing. These pieces display each individual's unique hobbies and interests, touching the hearts of those who come in contact with each piece.

Each of these roles, whether in a sport, club, sorority/fraternity, or off-campus work-study, adds a unique aspect to the CWC. These extracurriculars not only add knowledge of various topics, but also create stories, gives perspectives, and creates empathy that connects with each writer who walks through the doors.

At the Writing Center, we don't just help students revise essays—we help them grow as writers by encouraging them to express their passions. By participating in a variety of activities and showcasing strong writing skills, we show students that there is no single 'type' of writer.  What they do outside the classroom matters, and when expressed properly, it can enhance their writing.
